How to Choose the Right Toothbrush

Soft or medium, manual or electric? A simple guide to picking a brush your gums will thank you for.

Article cover image

Walk down any pharmacy aisle and you will find dozens of toothbrushes promising a perfect clean. The truth is simpler: the best brush is the one you use properly, twice a day.

Soft bristles win

Hard bristles can wear down enamel and irritate gums. A soft brush removes plaque just as well when you use gentle, circular motions.

Manual or electric?

Electric brushes make good technique easier, especially for kids, people with braces or anyone with limited dexterity. A manual brush works perfectly too if you take your time.

When to replace it

Every three months, or sooner if the bristles look splayed. After a cold or flu is also a good moment for a fresh one.
