Helping Kids Feel Calm at the Dentist
Small things parents can do before and after a visit to make dental care a positive experience.

Children pick up on how adults feel. A relaxed parent is the best preparation for a relaxed first visit.
Before the visit
Read a picture book about the dentist, play pretend with a toothbrush and keep the language positive. Avoid words like hurt or scary, even to reassure.
During and after
Let your child sit on your lap if they want to. Afterwards, celebrate with something fun that is not a sugary treat, like a trip to the park.
When to book the first visit
Around the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing.
